Atomefabrik Steampunk Brass Goggles

When I first went hunting for goggles, I quickly found the Atomefabrik site (warning – flashing site, see below) for cyberpunk styled goggles – predominantly aluminium with spikes or symbols on them.  In short, they weren’t particularly Steampunk (although they did look very high quality).

However, over at the forum in the Definitive Goggle Thread, poster 4iamgod pointed out that there’s a new Steampunk section!  And joy of joys – they’re made of beloved machined brass!  They’re currently custom pieces, so there’s no prices to them yet, but between the green lensed ones above (that give the impression of an iris closure on the right lens) to some utterly dashing ‘aviator’ ones with polished mirrored lenses.  Springs, hinges, screws, wires and best of all – brass.  I couldn’t ask for better components!

Should you get lost, do click “slow version for easy paced people” on the far left to reduce the flashing, then click “goggles” in the top dial, and then click “Steampunk!” twice (once on the page with the dog, once on the page with the rather animated bearded gentleman).

Max Chen (of Oilycog.com) jet pack

Mr Chen, you wrote to point out that someone had made things far better than yours – well, I found quite a lot I liked on your site too!  Above, for example, is a very nicely made (and accessorised) jetpack inspired by both Rocketeer and Steamboy.  I also really adore your Vacuous Squids and also the wonderful ideas that your SF Bicycle Astrolabe generate in my mind.  I mean, an artifact from a bicycle-centric world that shows the cycle routes (and nothing else) of the city, as well as a very cycle specific plea around the edge, hoping to avoid the terrors of cycling – potholes, cars and glass.   Coupled with valve-headed metal squid monsters (that double as candleholders) and I’m terribly impressed!

That, and anyone who posts an image that looks like Totoro is trying to hatch his head is a man with quite a lot of character.  chuckles  Thankyou, Mr Chen – I’ll post the link you actually meant to send at some point, I promise!

Morning Fog by George Grie, from neosurrealismart.com

I was quite taken with the above image, sent to me by Mr Pinderschloss, of an old Victorian styled mansion now quite underwater with rays in the garden and old submarines haunting past the upper windows.  One of a multitude of impressive pieces (though there are few quite as Steampunk themed) images from NeoSurrealismArt.com by Mr Grie.  You’ll find a much larger version of the image above in Gallery 2 called Morning Mist, and I can recommend Arrested Expansion in Gallery 1, and Infinite Improbabilty Drive also in Gallery 2.  Some perfectly lovely stuff, a significant amount of it somewhat odd, but that is to be expected.

Thank you very much, Mr Pinderschloss – you put me on to the trail of some lovely images! (Last Harbour is rather nice too, with a very LXG inspired Nautilus-named ship in a room in a glacier.)

Steampunk Magazine, Issue 2 - Journal of Misapplied Technology

Three cheers for the Steampunk Magazine!  The new issue appears to be available from their site, and it’s subtitled “The Journal of Misapplied Technology” – which really is a marvelous name.  I’ve had a read (of the articles, I’ve left the works of fiction for later) and there’s some wonderful stuff – from an interview with Crabfu, to how to make your own Pennyfakething, to a history of the Steampunk genre, to advice on finding your Steampunk wardrobe style (and significantly more – I apologise for not mentioning it all!)

Lovely stuff indeed, and I must congratulate Mr Magpie and his co-conspiritors on an excellent piece.

Steampunk Treehouse Fundraising Event

Both Mr Orlando and Mr Estee wrote to us know about the Steampunk Treehouse fundraising event on the 9th of June in  West Oakland, California.  The Steampunk Treehouse is a project to build a mechanical, and steam-filled faux-tree for Burning Man and probably other events too.  It will be both a contemplative place, a piece of art, and a whimsical take on the Steampunk affection for both technology and natural science.

I do wish them the best of luck and it seems like it’ll be quite the event!  With the Copper Lantern Fire Theatre, Kinetic Steamworks, the Dept. of Spontaneous Combustion and Jeremy Krentz and his Tesla Coil (as well as a great deal more) to provide entertainment.  Sounds utterly, desperately, dangerously fun!

Bronze p-77 with rebel controller

Mr M. Christian spotted a lovely little Steampunk vinyl biped vehicle and rebellious pilot over at the ‘i like toys‘ site.  Called the P-77 and done in a bronze effect, it’s by PhuEk! and I’m rather taken with its diminutive (6″/15cm) charm.  I could certainly see several of these stomping across a battleground, staggering most akwardly and venting steam with every shuddering step!  I do still prefer the good Doktor A’s work, however, but variety is wonderful and the more the merrier.

So, I’m *ahem* only 53 years late in watching this, one of the most iconic of Steampunk movies, though the majority of those years I hope I’d be forgiven for. But yes – I’ve finally watched the Disney movie, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. (Amazon UK/US).  It was fantastic, even after over half a century, with beautiful interiors, rivets a plenty, the wonderful Captain Nemo and that fantastic giant squid.  Others have spoke of it far better than I can, and I really do feel quite foolish even trying to do it justice myself.  So many other things just make that much more sense, now.
However, there was one part of it that I found myself strangely drawn to – the dinner scene.  Finding all they need at the bottom of the ocean, I wondered about some of the ingredients mentioned – sea cucumber, sea snake, barnacles and blowfish.  For those interested, apparenty sea cucumber can be bought dried, and acts somewhat like tofu in its form and lack of taste (but willingness to aquire other flavours), but sea snake doesn’t seem to get eaten much, possibly because it contains a venom that affects the nervous system (still, didn’t stop people eating blowfish).  Still, interesting and it all facinated me, Captain Nemo getting all he needs from the ocean, from food to peace of mind.

You may recall the downright lovely crystal adorned hollowed lightbulb from TeamDroid, well the above is a video of a creation inspired by that, called the Glow Crystal Lamp.  A hollowed lightbulb with a crystal, two LEDs, and some UV reactive solution (as well as some cunning microcontroller programming) resulted in a curiously retro light that seems to initially flicker on with a dull red hue, before sparking to life and illuminating the fluid with an eerie, etheral glow that then pulses malevolently!  (The added sound effects are lovely, but I’m sure just for the video)

I have to say that with the proper housing, this could be quite a magnificient Steampunk mad scientist’s mood/feature light, or even as a component to a larger work – either way, it cries out to be set amongst baffling dials and dark wood.  Well spotted, Mr Prowler50mil!

The Golden Compass – New Trailer

We posted the previous trailer, but this one has a bit more content to it – and any day with an airship is a good day, in my opinion.   The film (of the book) The Golden Compass, is set to be released almost worldwide between the 5th and 7th of December, and I must say that this, along with Stardust, are set to have some beautiful airship featuring Steampunk films to enjoy.  A most excellent moustache from Mr Elliott too.

I must ask – do sharper eyed readers than I also suspect that to be a Wimshurst Machine in the background there?  A very nice touch, if it is.  Better quality videos can be found over at Yahoo.  Thanks to Mr Tyrell, and to the people at Digg (where I read it this morning – there was much oohing and aahing).

Mini-ITX Underwood mod

Turning a typewriter into a keyboard has been done several times and it always impresses me terribly.  But turning a typewriter into a whole PC?  That’s even more impressive, surely.  Above is the mini-ITX modded Underwood No.5 typewriter mod, sent in by Ms. Brumfield of The Steampunk Home.  The mini-ITX is a very specificially tiny computer motherboard (and other elements) that modders have put in the most curious of containers – this typewriter being only one of the more Steampunk.

While on closer inspection the keyboard itself lets the mod down a little, it’s still far beyond my skills and a lovely piece to sit in a study.  Particularly amusing is the use of a peculiar piece of software called Home Typist that lets you assign a sound to each keypress – while the site has some very odd (and no doubt deeply annoying) sounds to choose, the modder recorded the sound of the keypresses from a real working Underwood, and used those.  So it now sounds, and looks very much like the real thing!
