Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicka Obscura – Game

Arcanum

*chuckles* Ok, ok – I give in! I’m at this very moment downloading the demo of the most recommended Steampunk game as sent in by very kind contributors – Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicka Obscura. People such as Mr M Ryan, Mr J Meeker, and several more have recommended this game quite highly – being mindful of its flaws, but enjoying it for very indepth character creation and the technological successor to Fallout (by the same company, Troika).

In a world of elves, trolls, orcs and dwarves, where magick and technology do not make easy bedfellows, and racial strife abounds between previously cleekish fantasy species, you create your avatar of extraordinary depth – choose magick or technology to be your tools (or neither) and enter a world unlike any that I’ve played before.

For more information, maybe you’d like to visit the comprehensive Wikipedia page. I look forward to trying it out, despite my previous aversion to ‘fantasy’ Steampunk. *smiles*

  • I didn't think you meant to mislead :) Very nice blog by the way, I've enjoyed reading other bits of it since I discovered it with this article.

Thank you for the correction, Mr Wayland. It was not my intention to mislead, I was just uninformed - but I am glad to learn something new every day. *smiles*
  • Your post is slightly misleading, Troika did not make Fallout, though the three people who started Troika had been the masterminds behind Fallout (Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky and Jason Anderson) back when they were working at Interplay (before it went bust).

Arcanum is very good, only a few problems the biggest of which are that it has an unnecessary level cap at level 50 and is slightly buggy.
Definitely a must game if you are into steam punk or cRPG's of any sort regardless.
  • I LOVE this game. It's my most favourite game next to Planescape: Torment and the Fallout RPGs. I has exactly the right ballance between Steampunk and Fantasy and the pure fun of building all those mechanical gadgets had me doing nothing else than trying to get certain components for weeks ;)
  • Josahn
That only one true Steampunk game that i ever found. Now is aged but some time i play it again just for the pleasure to built mechanicle's spiders.
But why no one company does a new one?

Arcanum is perhaps one of the most awesome games ever created. I spent many, many weeks beating the living tar out of it.

It's a crying shame troika went belly up though. Seriously, I teared up a bit when I heard the news, but after the sadness was anger. Hulk-smashing greenface anger. And as we all know, anger leads to alcohol, and alcohol leads to awesome stories starting with "I woke up with a hangover in a dumpster...."
