Steam Kits from the New Energy Shop

A Steam Trike

Is it ironic that a shop with the address NewEnergyShop should have so very many steam engines? Including kits showing you the principles behind Hero’s engine of the 1st Century AD? Possibly, but I’m certainly not about to hold it against them – not when they sell such beautiful and educational steam toys and kits. From large transparent steam engines (so you can see the workings through the glass) to simple Hero Engine recreations, to the above miniature steam trike – they will sell (quite pricy, but I imagine high quality) steam demonstration devices both assembled and in kit form for those who wish them.

And I must say hello and thank you to the recently joined, Sudden Device for sending me the link. Such pretty steam engines, no doubt I’ll be sighing over the page for weeks now.

Check out this awesome little toy at scitoys.com -

it's a very simple steam boat, which may take you as little as 10 minutes to build if you have some materials. While not steampunk, not even a steam engine as we love them --- with choo-choo, steam clouds, smoke and oil spraying everything around -- it's an amazing and lovely toy.

Um, heh, that's actually exactly what i was trying to say... Guess my writing skills are sub-par today :)

Jake - I believe they've used steam for ages. In fact, I think that even nuclear generators use steam - the heat from the radioactive decay heats the water to steam, for the turbines. In fact, it's only things like solar, wind and hydro that don't use heating water to steam. Although I believe that some new solar collectors (not photovoltaics) can be rigged to heat water to boiling with the correct parabolic collectors. But I'm no expert, believe me.

Beaty, good to hear - I wish your partner the very best of luck, and anything that teaches a new generation of people about how cool steam is is ok in my eyes.
  • Fantastic!

My parner is a trainee secocondary school science teacher. She is to do a lesson about electricity soon, so she will be bowled over by these lovely little machines...

    Nice find!

Ironic? Well, not really... While steam is certainly THE energy source of the past, it is also, i believe, destined for a huge revival in the years to come. In fact, don't most power plants use steam now? Not the hydroelectric ones, of course, but coal and nuke--right?

Anyway, back to (the subject of )the future. Check out BMW's idea of a hybrid vehicle! http://www.popsci.com/popsci/automotivetech/163...
Though, i think they stole the idea from Army of Darkness...
