Wallpapers!

To go along with the Steampunk Name Generator page, I’ve now added a Steampunk Wallpaper page – where I will hopefully be adding more wallpapers as time goes on. At the moment, there are two wallpapers up in three different sizes:

Lobster Tank – Crabfu

Posted by on September 17th,2006

Lobster Tank

Crabfu has been at it again – and this time I have to say he’s created something interesting indeed. This, called the Steampunk Lobster Tank, looks all too like something that could be full size. There’s handrails going around the side! (How tempted I’d be to put lego crew on it…) If you check out the page, you can see the concept sketches, and Iwei has described some of his thoughts concerning the design process (there were going to be weapons turrets). Also, watch for the video of the tank negotiating Iwei’s garden – trundling over lumps of wood and tree stumps.

A very nice Steampunk addition, looking far more military than previous efforts.

Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management

Posted by on September 17th,2006

Mrs Beeton's Book

Or, to give it it’s full and proper name:

The Book of Household Management Comprising information for the Mistress, Housekeeper, Cook, Kitchen-Maid, Butler, Footman, Coachman, Valet, Upper and Under House-Maids, Lady’s-Maid, Maid-of-all-Work, Laundry-Maid, Nurse and Nurse-Maid, Monthly Wet and Sick Nurses, etc. etc. – also Sanitary, Medical, & Legal Memoranda: with a History of the Origin, Properties, and Uses of all Things Connected with Home Life and Comfort.”

Mrs Beeton is a legend, it must be said – the most famous cookery writer in British history and the guide for so many on the day to day living of a proper middleclass Gentlewoman of the Victorian times. While most of her book is devoted to recipes, she also gives advice on the proper way to invite guests to dinner parties, what kind of soil is best when moving home and the ettiquette of having to dance with someone you’d rather not, at a party.

I’d been looking for Victorian recipies when I found Mrs Beeton’s complete book available to read online – and I’m very glad that I did. Now, I shall never be stuck for how to behave when taking children to visit close friends (unless they are very well trained children, you should leave them in the carriage or cab outside), or that children require more oxygen than adults and you should keep them away from the mephtic gas one emits from the skin at night! Thank you, Mrs Beeton, I do not know what I would have done without you.

(Please note, that some of what Mrs Beeton suggests, is delightfully old fashioned and in some places, almost comedic with it’s inappropriateness to modern days – visiting the poor and giving them tips on cleanliness, for one.)

AirBuccaneers – PC UT2004 Mod

Air Buccaneers

Well, it had to happen – no sooner had I made a snide remark at the lack of Steampunk games, but I find a thoroughly Steampunk total conversion for Unreal Tournament, 2004 called AirBuccaneers. While I do not own UT2004, I’m sorely tempted to go out and pick it up, purely on the strength of this mod. Described on the website as:

“The game is a compelling combination of graceful air ballet, fierce pirate-like action and 3D tactical manoeuvring.”

It sounds and looks wonderful – there’s roughly hewn airships firing cannons across a murky landscape at each other. Characters with bowler hats and portly gentlemen who no doubt still say things like “gg” and “lol!!” a lot ;) I do encourage you to go and take a look at some of the screenshots and the trailer (12Mb wmv). It’s 3 years old now, and made by a team at the University of Oulu, Finland. Well done, gentlemen.

Rise of Legends – Concept Art

Age of Legends Concept Art

Those of you with their finger on the (altogether too weak) pulse of Steampunk computer/video-games will already of heard of Big Huge Game’s fantastical real time strategy game, Rise of Legends. It features a singleplayer campain with battles between three races – the Aztec inspired ‘Coutl’, with their jaguars and jade, the ‘Alin’ – who seem inspired by Arabian Nights with sand and fire dominating, and finally and of most interest to us, the ‘Vinci’ – a collection of city states interested in mechanical devices, lighter than air travel, and steam as a power source. Quite Steampunk!

I played the demo, and unfortunately I couldn’t bring myself to really get into it – I am an RTS novice and I generally don’t play them, and I found it a little overwhelming. I’m sure however, that it’s a fine game for those who prefer to order the machinations of armies at their control!

But despite that, there is still the glorious artwork to feast my eyes apon. So I present a veritable three course meal of wonderful, scene setting concept art for the Vinci! Official Vinci concept art. Another concept art gallery. Conceptart.org’s forum post with more art! Which brings me to an interesting event that is being held in the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. There will be more concept art (of the wonderful Vinci, no doubt) in their display from the 14th of September, to the 8th of October, 2006.

Nemo

Nemo Gould's Kraken

Though his website seems to have vanished to the deep dark depths of the murky web, tales still surface of the mysterious, dangerous and elegant Kraken sculpture. While you may see photographs of the beast (here and here), it seems to be a rare occurance that someone should live to see it. Especially at a cost to own this mechanical piece of artwork of $25,000. An interesting piece of art, the artist Nemo Gould also seems to do robots in various forms too. It’s a shame his website seems to have been pulled out from under him. Thanks to MikeST for reminding me about this!

Steampunk Name Generator

The Name Generator

You may notice in the side bar at the top that a new page has arrived – a Steampunk name generator! Now, for when you need a nom de plume, an alias or just something to throw the evil geniuses off your real identity, you can have a Steampunk name of your own. Many adventures were had with HTML getting it to work, and I’d like to thank my gentleman friend (who’s Steampunk name would be “Proffesor Patrick Canning”) for doing the code side of it. My gratitude is yours, sir!

Do feel free to post your Steampunk name, if it pleases you – not even I know all the delightful combinations that it may create. It is case sensitive, but you will always get the same name from an identical entry. I would be – “Squad Leader Rebecca Pocket”, which is not a bad Steampunk name.

The Neverwas Haul

The Neverwas Haul

The Neverwas Haul has been quite popular on the internet recently, and rightly so. The intrepid explorers from the Hibernian Empire went on a diplomatic expedition to Black Rock City in their steam traction pulled 3 storey Victorian home on wheels. As far as could be acertained, it was a success.

From their Tribe.net page:

“The Neverwas Haul represents a reimagining of the victorian era, an era when technology and exploration fueled the imagination of the Continent, and gentlemen and ladies of leisure set out in pursuit of the strange and wonderous. Inspired by the works of Jules Verne, the neverwas haul represents a combination of the Victorian love of comfort and imposition of its own values on to the primitive landscape of the old and new worlds and pure, unadultered belief in the overaching grace of technology.”

They’ve also been featued on Wired and their dedication ceremony is up on YouTube in two parts. (Part 1 and Part 2, there may have been more parts, but alas I couldn’t find them.) Long Live Hibernia! I think.

The Gyrotourbillon – A Watch Masterpiece

Posted by on September 12th,2006

Jaeger-LeCoultre Gyrotourbillon

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Gyrotourbillon (what a mouthful!) is a watch. When I say that, it’s like saying the Crown Jewels are trinkets and jewelry. Steampunk often features cogs and gears – clockwork is certainly a strong theme in many Steampunk things, so please excuse me when I say that the above link and image is probably the equivalent of cog-rotica. There are watchmakers somewhere who need to loosen their collars and have a nice calming cup of tea after looking at this stuff, I’m sure.

It has a gyroscope inside it, designed to combat inaccuracy. The gyroscope surround is made from modern materials such as alumin(i)um and as such it weighs less than a grain of rice. There are golden screws inside to create the right weight in the right size, and the twin power barrels are topped with sapphire covers so that they might still be seen into. It’s so stunning – I find it somehow borderline absurd! Thanks to MikeST to sending in the link using the new link-suggestion page.

The Bessemer-Bot

Bessemer Convertor - http://buhlplanetarium.tripod.com/BuhlLectureImages.html

A Steampunk war machine at rest? A Victorian perambulatory contraption chained up outside the gentleman’s club? Alas no – it’s a Bessemer Convertor, the revolutionary development in steel production that gained massive popularity in the mid 1800′s before being phased out in the mid 1900′s – so a good century of use. But oh – doesn’t it look like it should wander down the street, balancing precariously on the cobbles and unnerving the carriage horses as it stomps by!

For more photographs of these wonderful beasties:

Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust, National Recreation Trains photograph, one from Flikr, and finally, one of my favourites: Four Thirds Bessemer photograph. Thanks to Mr. Hildebrandt for alerting me to their existance.
